Smuggling KFC During New Zealand COVID-19 Lockdown, These 2 Men Are Threatened With 6 Months In Prison

New Zealand police have arrested two men trying to enter Auckland. The suspect smuggled KFC chicken and tens of thousands of dollars in boots.

Reporting from the BBC, Wednesday (22/9/2021), the two men were charged with violating the country’s strict COVID-19 rules. During Auckland’s strict Level 4 lockdown, all restaurants, including take-out services, remain closed.

Police said the two men were aged 23 and 30. They had traveled about 120km from Hamilton, south of Auckland.

A spokesman for the police said officers made the arrests after they spotted the vehicle which looked suspicious as it was traveling on a gravel road on the outskirts of the city.

“After seeing a police car, it turned around and drove away to avoid the police,” the officer said during an Auckland Police press release, Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

“The vehicle was searched and police found cash, in addition to empty bags and lots of food to take home,” he added.

It is not clear at this time the motives of the two men, whether they intended to sell the food or use it to distract if they were stopped by officers.

A spokesman for the police said the two men would appear in court later this year for violating public health rules. However, further allegations are also possible, therefore an investigation is ongoing.

Both face prison terms under New Zealand’s tough anti-COVID-19 laws, which carry a maximum sentence of six months and a fine of around IDR 39 million.

Although New Zealand plans to lower the Lockdown Level in Auckland to level 3 from midnight on Tuesday. However, freedom will still be very limited, residents will have to stay at home except when they are studying, working or shopping. Apart from Auckland, the rest of the country remains under Level 2 lockdown with shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs all open.
